Thanks for posting this, I hadn't read it in years but it's a great one, especially about language and gender.
I have a lot of questions about his description of Sapir-Whorf; the examples he gives (the future tense and Schadenfreude ones) are so ridiculous, it's hard to believe that's really what the theory claimed. I don't understand how we would ever learn a new word in that scenario.
But when he gets past that, the actual language differences are fascinating. It reminds me of a piece that Allison Parrish used to reference a lot about how different cultures see color, based on which colors have names and how they are grouped.
I'd like to suggest: Gamma, Erich; Helm, Richard; Johnson, Ralph; Vlissides, John (1995). Design Patterns: Elements of Reusable Object-Oriented Software. Addison-Wesley. ISBN 978-0-201-63361-0. Design patterns in code have their inspiration in scalable design concepts in architecture developed by Christopher Alexander in his 1977 book A Pattern Language: Towns, Buildings, Construction. Design patterns have apparently been much more successful in programming than in architecture. Arguably (there has been some controversy around design patterns from the get go), design patterns offer an analytical tool for examining code at medium and large scale. They also drift into cultural patterns, particularly as they organize processes and information. Design Patterns offered a "toolkit" of solutions rather than a hierarchical or universalizing approach to design that resonates still. The book itself has many code examples. The patterns provide procedural metaphors that suggest wider applications.
By the way, we also have this Zotero group for amassing a Critical Code Studies reading list. Please, join in and help us find as wide a range of readings as possible.

I'd like to recommend this article, it's from 2010, but I still refer to it from time to time:

(Also, hi Patricia! Nice to see ICP folks here)

Hi @Temkin, great to see you here too!
Also, I really like Allison Parrish's work, which I was fortunate to hear at...ICP!

Why am I only seeing this book now?
